Peppies

Which Dutch benefits are you missing out on?

Hundreds of thousands of households in the Netherlands never apply for toeslagen (government benefits) they are actually entitled to — often worth hundreds of euros a year. Peppies checks in a minute whether that includes you.

Zorgtoeslag (healthcare benefit), huurtoeslag (rent benefit), kindgebonden budget (child budget) and kinderopvangtoeslag (childcare benefit): the rules change every year, and many people — expats especially — wrongly assume they do not qualify. The benefits check in Peppies uses the data you already track — your income, your rent, your family — and shows per benefit whether applying is worth it. No forms, no hassle: an honest indication with a direct link to the official trial calculation of the Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax authority).

Zorgtoeslag: even on a normal income

The income limit for the healthcare benefit is higher than many people think (in 2026 well over €40,000 for singles and €51,000 with a partner). Especially after a drop in income — fewer hours, between jobs, separated — it pays to check again.

Huurtoeslag: no hard income limit anymore

Since the rules were relaxed, the rent benefit tapers off gradually instead of stopping abruptly. If your rent is below the maximum eligible rent, the check is almost always worth it — even if you were told "no" before.

Kindgebonden budget and kinderopvangtoeslag

The child budget is often granted automatically, but not always — and the childcare benefit has no income limit at all: even on a high income you get at least around a third of your childcare costs reimbursed. These are the two most commonly missed schemes.

Never miss a deadline again

With one tap Peppies puts reminders in your calendar: your Dutch tax return before 1 May, and a nudge every December to check the new benefit limits. Does your income or rent change? Then you know you have to report it — so you avoid having to pay money back.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether I am entitled to Dutch benefits (toeslagen)?

It depends on your (joint) toetsingsinkomen (assessable income), your rent, your children and your assets. The benefits check in Peppies gives an indication per benefit based on your situation; you then work out the exact amount with the official trial calculation of the Belastingdienst.

Does Peppies calculate the exact benefit amount?

No, deliberately not. The exact amounts depend on your precise assessable income, your assets and annual rules that change every year. Peppies shows whether applying is worth it and then sends you on to the official trial calculation — which is always up to date and binding.

What is a toeslagpartner (benefit partner)?

Usually your spouse, registered partner or the person you live with under a cohabitation agreement, with a shared child or a jointly owned home. Your incomes are then counted together for the benefits. Not sure? The Belastingdienst has a tool to determine it.

I did not get huurtoeslag before — is it worth checking again?

Yes. Since 2020 there is no longer a hard income limit for the rent benefit: it tapers off gradually. If you were just above the limit before, you may qualify now. After moving house or a drop in income, a new check is also worthwhile.

Can I apply for toeslagen as an expat or international?

In most cases yes, as long as you live in the Netherlands, are registered with your gemeente (municipality), have a BSN and — for zorgtoeslag — Dutch health insurance. Your nationality is not the deciding factor; your income, rent and family situation are. The check in Peppies gives you the indication in English.

Is the benefits check free?

Yes. The check is simply part of Peppies and uses the data you already track for your budget. Starting with Peppies is free.
